Calculating exact calendar spans between milestone events is crucial for project management scheduling, legal notice periods, commercial lease durations, and financial interest accrual. Because calendar months vary in length between twenty-eight and thirty-one days while accounting for leap years, manual date arithmetic frequently produces frustrating and expensive off-by-one errors. You select a start date, an end date, and choose whether to include the final end day in the total duration count.

The resulting summary breaks down the total elapsed interval into calendar days, standard seven-day weeks, business working days from Monday through Friday, and weekend days. These granular breakdowns help project managers schedule sprint deadlines, verify service contract terms, and plan payroll work cycles accurately without tedious calendar counting. Note that while standard business day calculations exclude Saturdays and Sundays, they do not automatically deduct regional public or bank holidays, which must be accounted for manually.

The difference in milliseconds between the UTC timestamps of the two dates is converted into total elapsed calendar days. The interval is iterated day by day to count Monday through Friday dates as business working days and weekend days, while total hours and minutes are derived directly from the day count.
