About this calculator
Interpreting political opinion polls, academic surveys, or customer feedback questionnaires requires understanding that sample percentages rarely match whole population views with absolute perfection. Whenever a polling organization surveys a random sample of four hundred respondents instead of an entire national population, natural sampling variation introduces measurable uncertainty into reported figures. You enter the sample size n, the observed or estimated proportion percentage, and select your desired statistical confidence level percentage.
The computed output states the margin of error expressed as a plus-or-minus percentage point spread around your sample proportion estimate. For example, a candidate polling at fifty-two percent with a four-point margin of error could realistically hold between forty-eight and fifty-six percent true voter support. Be mindful that margin of error only measures random sampling variability; it does not capture systematic survey errors caused by non-response bias, leading questionnaire phrasing, or unrepresentative sampling frames.
How It Works & Formula
The calculation takes the estimated proportion product p times one minus p and divides it by the total sample size n. Taking the square root of that quotient yields standard error, which is multiplied by the critical Z-score corresponding to the selected confidence level to produce the final margin of error percentage.
