Password Strength & Entropy
Everyday & OtherThis tool measures password security and information entropy in bits by evaluating character pool diversity alongside total string length. It calculates theoretical brute-force crack times to help individuals assess authentication vulnerability and construct resilient credentials against modern automated dictionary attacks.
Strength: Very Strong & Cryptographically Secure (80+ bits) · Estimated GPU Crack Time: Trillions of Years
About this calculator
Securing online digital accounts against automated credential-stuffing and offline dictionary attacks requires a mathematically robust approach to credential design. Many users rely on predictable substitutions or short phrases that appear complex to humans but present minimal resistance against modern high-speed graphics processor cracking rigs. By analyzing string length alongside the diversity of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols, you measure the true combinatorial strength of your passphrase and security posture.
The computed output displays total information entropy expressed in bits alongside an estimated timeframe required for an adversary to exhaust all possible character combinations. Higher bit entropy indicates exponential resistance against exhaustive brute-force search algorithms, providing a reliable benchmark for credential resilience. However, theoretical entropy calculations assume passwords are randomly generated and unknown to attackers, meaning credentials derived from leaked database dictionaries or common cultural phrases remain vulnerable regardless of raw character length. Employing a reputable password manager remains the safest long-term storage strategy.
How It Works & Formula
Entropy is calculated using Shannon's information theory formula, multiplying the password length by the base-2 logarithm of the available character pool size. The pool size increases as lowercase letters, uppercase characters, digits, and special symbols are incorporated. Estimated cracking time is then determined by dividing the total combination space of two to the power of entropy bits by hypothetical hardware guessing speeds.
