About this calculator

E-commerce brands and growth marketers frequently struggle to distinguish between gross advertising sales numbers and actual bottom-line profitability on paid performance campaigns. A seemingly impressive top-line ROAS metric can still generate significant net financial losses if product gross margins are insufficient to cover media spend and cost of goods sold. To establish actual financial viability, you enter total campaign advertising expenditure, the total sales revenue directly generated by the campaign, and your baseline product profit margin percentage.

The resulting metrics display your realized ROAS as both an efficiency multiplier and percentage, the minimum break-even ROAS required to avoid losses, and net profits after deducting media costs. Comparing your realized ROAS against the break-even threshold clarifies whether to scale ad budgets or rework creative assets and targeting. Note that this calculation evaluates direct campaign attribution and product margins, without including ancillary merchant processing fees, shipping expenses, or product returns and customer refund rates.

How It Works & Formula

FormulaROAS = (Revenue Generated from Ads / Ad Spend) Γ— 100% | Break-even ROAS = 1 / Profit Margin

Return on ad spend is calculated using ROAS = (Revenue Generated from Ads / Ad Spend) Γ— 100%, producing both a percentage and performance multiplier. Break-even ROAS is derived by dividing one by the product profit margin percentage (1 / Profit Margin). Net profit after ads is determined by multiplying total revenue by profit margin and subtracting total advertising spend.
