By providing the initial capital outlay, the final gross return, and the overall duration of the holding period, you can quantify total net profit, simple percentage ROI, and the compound annualized rate of return.

The computed ROI percentage reflects the overall profitability of the capital deployed, while the annualized rate reveals how fast the asset expanded on a standardized yearly basis. Comparing annualized metrics allows analysts to weigh short-term high-yield projects against multi-year corporate initiatives on equal footing. Keep in mind that basic ROI formulas do not automatically adjust for investment risk levels, intermittent cash distributions, recurring maintenance costs, or capital gains taxes incurred upon asset realization.

Total return on investment is computed by subtracting the initial investment cost from the final value, dividing this net profit by the initial cost, and multiplying by 100%. When an investment lifespan is specified, annualized ROI converts the total percentage gain into a geometric compound annual growth rate using the holding period in years. This normalizes returns to facilitate direct comparison across projects of varying durations.
