Body Fat Percentage (US Navy)
Health & FitnessEstimate body fat percentage, total fat mass, and lean tissue mass using circumference tape measurements of the neck, waist, and hips. Athletes, military personnel, and fitness practitioners use this standardized anthropometric technique to evaluate physical conditioning and track body composition progress without costly specialized clinical scans.

About this calculator
Relying strictly on standard bathroom scales fails to reveal whether body weight changes stem from losing adipose tissue, shedding water weight, or gaining skeletal muscle. Users enter their biological sex, height, neck circumference, waist circumference, and hip circumference (for women), along with their current total weight. Physical conditioning coaches, military recruits, and body composition enthusiasts employ this tape-measure method as an accessible, cost-free alternative to dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) and hydrostatic weighing.
Body composition metrics outline estimated body fat percentage, total fat mass in pounds or kilograms, lean muscle mass, and corresponding fitness category classifications. Evaluating changes in lean mass versus fat mass over time provides clear confirmation of dietary and training effectiveness. As a practical caveat, tape measurement accuracy depends heavily on consistent tape tension and exact anatomic placement; measuring after meals or with a loose tape can noticeably skew results.
How It Works & Formula
The method applies logarithmic equations developed by the Naval Health Research Center that correlate body circumferences with body density. For men, body fat is derived from the difference between waist and neck circumferences relative to height; for women, the calculation adds hip circumference to account for gynoid fat distribution. The estimated body density is converted to percentage body fat using the Siri formula, which subsequently computes fat mass and lean mass from total body weight.
