Brick Calculator
Construction & DIYThis masonry estimation tool determines the total number of standard bricks required to build a wall based on surface dimensions and joint thickness. It incorporates an adjustable breakage allowance to ensure you purchase sufficient material for continuous laying without sudden project delays.

About this calculator
Estimating masonry materials accurately prevents costly supply shortages and expensive excess pallets on residential or commercial job sites. When building an exterior brick veneer, freestanding garden boundary, or structural partition wall, contractors begin by measuring the total wall length and height in feet, alongside the individual brick face dimensions and planned mortar joint thickness in inches. Factoring in joint thickness is essential because mortar occupies a measurable portion of the total wall face area.
The resulting calculation indicates the total unit count required to cover the gross surface area once joint spacing is fully accounted for. Because masons must cut units around corners, window sills, and bond courses, ordering an additional five to ten percent waste buffer protects against cutting losses and handling breakage. Always subtract significant window or door openings from your overall gross wall area to avoid ordering substantial material overages.
How It Works & Formula
The calculation computes total wall area and divides it by the face area of a single brick unit expanded by the mortar joint thickness on its perimeter. This base quantity is then multiplied by the chosen scrap percentage factor to deliver the final recommended order quantity.
