Installing new tile or hardwood planks requires accurate square footage measurements and realistic allowances for end cuts, pattern matching, and accidental breakage. Flooring products are packaged and sold in manufacturer cartons containing fixed amounts of square footage, meaning buyers must round up to full carton units. Entering the room length and width alongside the square footage coverage per box and your chosen waste percentage calculates the total required square footage and whole box count.

Checking both the base room area and the buffered total area ensures you purchase enough material without creating excessive leftover waste. A ten percent waste allowance is typical for straight grid plank installations, whereas diagonal patterns or complex herringbone layouts require fifteen to twenty percent extra material. As an important caveat, manufacturers frequently discontinue tile dye lots and laminate runs, making it difficult to source matching planks later if initial estimates fall short.
