Drywall Sheet Calculator
Construction & DIYThis drywall sheet calculator estimates the number of four-by-eight or four-by-twelve drywall panels needed to finish residential walls and ceilings. Calculate total sheetrock board requirements alongside estimated drywall screws, joint compound, and paper finishing tape to budget interior framing and hanging projects accurately.
Total drywall surface area: 774 sq ft (including 10% waste buffer)
About this calculator
Hanging drywall panels across residential renovations requires calculating total surface area for both vertical walls and overhead ceilings while accounting for trim cutoffs. Installers need to know whether standard four-by-eight sheets or longer four-by-twelve boards best optimize installation speed and minimize taped seams. Providing your room length, width, ceiling height, and major door or window deductions calculates the net surface area and the total number of drywall panels required, including a waste allowance.
Reviewing panel estimates helps contractors order related hanging supplies such as joint compound, paper drywall tape, and coarse-thread drywall screws. Using longer twelve-foot sheets in larger rooms reduces the total number of butt joints, creating smoother finished surfaces that require less sanding. One practical caveat is that complex room layouts with multiple closet alcoves, soffits, and cathedral ceilings create substantial cut-off waste that can easily exceed standard ten percent allowances.
How It Works & Formula
Gross surface area sums the ceiling area and the four perimeter walls, subtracting deductions for major doors and windows to find net square footage. The net area is increased by a ten percent waste buffer and divided by thirty-two square feet for four-by-eight sheets or forty-eight square feet for four-by-twelve panels. Required quantities of joint compound, tape, and screws are estimated from total panel area.
