Goal is out of reach at this weight

About this calculator

Find the score you need on the final exam to hit a course goal. Type your current grade, how much the final is worth as a percent of the course, and the overall grade you want. The result is the minimum final score that lands that goal on a weighted average.

If the needed score is over 100%, the goal is out of reach at that weight unless extra credit exists. If the needed score is negative or very low, you already cleared the goal even with a weak final — still sit the exam if attendance or syllabus rules require it.

Syllabus rounding, curves, and drop-lowest quiz rules are not applied automatically. Adjust your “current” grade first if those policies already changed what the LMS shows.

How It Works & Formula

FormulaNeed = (Goal − Current × (1 − w)) / w

Need equals (Goal − Current × (1 − w)) / w, where w is the final’s weight as a fraction of the course. Current and Goal are percents on the same 0–100 scale. Weights above 1 or zero are rejected so the rearrange stays defined.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I need more than 100% on the final?

At that weight the goal is unreachable without extra credit or a syllabus change.

Do I enter the final weight as 20 or 0.20?

Enter the syllabus percent (for example 20 for 20%). The engine converts it to a fraction.

Are weighted categories already in my current grade?

Use the grade your LMS shows after category weights. Do not mix raw points from different scales.
