Gravel, Sand & Mulch Volume
Construction & DIYThis gravel, sand, and mulch volume calculator determines required cubic yards, cubic meters, and estimated tons for landscaping, driveway, and gardening projects. Input surface area dimensions and layer depth to order bulk aggregate, river rock, topsoil, or decorative bark mulch without unexpected material shortages.

About this calculator
Ordering bulk aggregate for driveways, drainage trenches, and garden mulch beds requires converting superficial square footage into three-dimensional volume and delivery weight. Landscaping suppliers typically sell loose materials by the cubic yard or by the ton, making it essential to determine both volume and mass before arranging delivery trucks. Entering the length, width, and intended application depth of your project area produces the total material volume in cubic yards and cubic meters, alongside estimated bulk weight in tons.
Interpreting the volume and weight figures allows property owners to select appropriate hauling methods and confirm that driveway load ratings are not exceeded. Heavy aggregates such as crushed gravel and coarse sand weigh approximately one point four tons per cubic yard, whereas organic wood mulch weighs significantly less at roughly one-half ton per cubic yard. A practical caveat is that loose soils and gravels undergo settling and mechanical compaction after spreading, requiring ten to fifteen percent additional material depth.
How It Works & Formula
Volume in cubic yards is calculated by multiplying area in square feet by depth in inches and dividing by three hundred twenty-four. Volume in cubic meters is derived from metric dimensions by multiplying area by depth in meters. Estimated tonnage is determined by multiplying total volume by the material bulk density coefficient.
