HVAC BTU Calculator
Construction & DIYThis thermal sizing tool calculates the estimated residential cooling capacity required for a room or building in British Thermal Units per hour and refrigeration tons. It evaluates floor area, regional climate severity, typical occupant density, and optional sun exposure to support preliminary air conditioner selection.
β 1.73 tons of cooling
About this calculator
Selecting the correct air conditioning capacity is critical for maintaining indoor thermal comfort, controlling humidity, and managing monthly energy utility expenses. An undersized cooling system runs constantly without reaching the desired thermostat setpoint during peak summer heat, while an oversized unit cools spaces too quickly without properly dehumidifying the air, causing clammy indoor conditions. You begin by entering total room square footage, choosing a regional climate factor, and specifying the normal number of occupants.
The primary output provides estimated cooling demand in British Thermal Units per hour along with equivalent refrigeration tons, where twelve thousand BTU per hour equals one ton. Homeowners can use this rating to compare equipment sizes across ductless mini-split units, window units, or central air systems. Keep in mind that this rule-of-thumb estimate does not replace a comprehensive Manual J load calculation, which also evaluates ceiling height, insulation levels, and window sun orientation.
How It Works & Formula
The baseline cooling demand is established by multiplying total floor square footage by a climate multiplier reflecting regional summer temperatures. It adds four hundred BTU per hour for each regular occupant and applies an additional solar radiation factor for sun-drenched rooms before converting total BTU to tons.
