Roofing Pitch & Shingles
Construction & DIYThis roofing pitch and shingles calculator computes actual sloped roof surface area, pitch slope multipliers, and required roofing squares and shingle bundles. Convert horizontal building footprint dimensions and roof pitch ratios into accurate material orders for architectural shingles, ridge caps, and underlayment.

About this calculator
Calculating materials for roof replacement requires translating a flat ground-level building footprint into true three-dimensional sloped surface area. Because steeper roof pitches expand total roof surface area significantly beyond the flat foundation dimensions, roofers rely on geometric slope multipliers to calculate material orders. Entering the ground length and width of the building footprint alongside the vertical roof pitch ratio generates the slope multiplier, sloped roof area, roofing squares, and bundle counts.
Understanding the output in roofing squares simplifies ordering, as one roofing square represents exactly one hundred square feet of installed roof coverage. Standard asphalt architectural shingles are packaged at three bundles per square, allowing builders to quickly determine retail package quantities. A vital caveat is that this geometric calculation assumes a simple gable structure, so complex hip roofs with dormers, valleys, and broad overhangs require additional waste allowances for valley cuts and starter strips.
How It Works & Formula
The slope multiplier is calculated by taking the square root of one plus the ratio of vertical rise over horizontal run squared. True roof surface area is determined by multiplying the flat ground footprint area by this pitch multiplier. The resulting square footage is divided by one hundred to determine roofing squares, which is multiplied by three to calculate shingle bundles.
