About this calculator

Accurately estimating lumber for wall framing prevents expensive mid-project supply runs and reduces jobsite material waste. Framing requires accounting for regular wall studs, double top plates, bottom sole plates, and extra studs for door/window rough openings and corners.

This tool computes total studs required for any wall length and height with standard 16" OC or 24" OC stud spacing, adding recommended corner and header framing allowances.

How It Works & Formula

FormulaStuds = floor(length / OC) + 1 + extra corners and openings

Base Studs = (Wall Length in inches / Spacing in inches) + 1. Plate Studs = (Wall Length / Stud Length) Γ— (Number of Top Plates + Number of Bottom Plates). Additional studs are added for each wall corner, door opening, and window opening.
